Wood Species

The look of your cabinets is one of your most important decisions. Each type of wood has its own distinctive character, and offers its own advantages. Consider these choices:

Red Oak has a prominent, open grain that can appear in a sweeping arch or a close-knit array. Oak's color ranges from reddish-brown, to yellow, to a lighter, whiter shade, and sometimes displays mineral deposit streaks of green, yellow or black.
Hickory has an open, flowing grain pattern. When finished with light or natural stains, its color ranges from light brown to deep brown; a darker stain softens the color range while retaining hickory's natural specks, burls, or mineral streaks.
Natural birch's distinctive grain can be straight, wavy, or curly. Birch is a medium-density hardwood with a predominant color of white or creamy yellow, and a heartwood color ranging from medium brown, dark brown, to reddish-brown.
Pine has a white-yellow-pink color range. Although it is softwood with a straight grain pattern, numerous solid knots produce variation and color changes. Distressing, done in the factory, lends a country look to this versatile choice.
Maple is primarily off-white with pale pink or yellow-brown hues. Maple can also contain red or tan streaks that darken with staining. This species is a strong hardwood, typically having a close, straight grain, although it can sometimes display a wavy or curly pattern.
Cherry hardwood is an elegant choice. It is primarily pinkish-brown in color, but can show shades of white, gray, green, or pink, which are accented by natural or lighter stains. Cherry mellows with age while retaining the figures, streaks, pine knots and small gum pockets that distinguish this species.
North American Poplar, a straight-grained hardwood, has a color range extending from white to green. Poplar commonly displays purple, blue, yellow, or black streaking, which is beautifully minimized by darker stains, paint, or paint with glaze finishes.

Thermofoil (top), Melamine (bottom) and high-pressure laminates offer varying degrees of durability, as well as warp-, scratch-, and bacteria-resistant finishes which suit today's busy lifestyles. While white and ivory are the most common color choices, many other color options are available.
